Why are the radio corps going nuts over sports talk? Above all else, it's money. Formats like sports that target a very narrow demographic (in this case, men) are very easy to sell to advertisers. Ratings aren't even necessary. Therein lies the appeal. Though I get the feeling we're on the way to overload.

A few years ago it was conservative talk. But advertisers have been moving away from polarizing formats. As for what else could go on these AM signals, there aren't a lot of choices. Music doesn't do well there anymore or skews too old. And they have no idea what to do with liberal talk. So there's not much left aside from leasing or selling to religious broadcasters. So, there's sports.
