Hey Brian- first of all you need to give us the connection to Madison media, as this isn't a politics message board. :)
Now I'm a liberal but I have some thoughts here.
To your points:
-I recognize that furlough days have been plentiful and I have not been thrilled with their use. It's disappointing that city, county, and state managers can't figure out other ways to fix their bottom lines. If I had as many furlough days as have been levied recently that would probably be enough fire for me to find another job or start my own business.
-What private counter parts are you comparing to in order to reach that 80% number? And why did you do the math? For one, I never talk about pay with my friends because that's a personal matter, and I definitely don't bust out the calculator and compare paychecks.
-You may make 80% of what your private counter parts make, but you still have a job when almost a quarter of the state doesn't.
-You may make 80% of what your private counter parts make, but those private counter parts make up for it with likely no pension plan, higher health care cost, and having to put money away individually into retirement accounts.
: I am a union steamfitter I also work for the state I make 80% of what my private counter parts make this covers my sick time and vacation time as of June 2009 I have begun making less than my private counter parts because of the wage freeze on top of that they also gave us furlough days and as of now I am almost $10 an hour behind the private steamfitters on top of all of that I have to pay for my own health insurance which thru the state would be $2400 out of my pocket I have gone thru blue cross blue Shield at a cost of $400 a month out of my pocket I don't know how much more I need to give you tell me
