: : Stuck in a truck to win a truck
:
: I always wonder with these types of promotions: from the contestants point of view: even if you win the prize - you still have to pay taxes on it, you lost wages from work/or burned vacation days, plus you don't get to see/spend time with your family for several days - does the post-tax value of the prize really outweigh the costs in the end? In my view, most likely "no."
im with you there. i always thought the same thing when i was on the air giving away 2 passes to star cinemas or a free promo cd (complete with punchole through upc). gotta pick up the prize during business hours, so the winner has to go to work a few minutes late in the morning, sacrifice their lunch or leave work a few minutes early.. for a prize worth like $15. factor in gas to get to the station..
a 30k truck is a little different, but i dont think the average joe has any idea of the tax implications. they have no clue that come taxtime they'll be shelling out $10,000 cash to the government.
the average joe likes the excitement factor, they get caught up in it. and hey, i guess anything free IS free..
my family hates to watch gameshows with me. "who wants to be a millionaire!?" me: "more like, who wants to be a $600,000aire, after taxes, then payable over a 40 yr annuity"
