: Radio For The Hearing Impaired

: On election night, a number of deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens were able to listen to radio coverage of the event for the first time using captioned radio displays which combine HD Radio technology with specially equipped receivers. Stenocaptioners monitored NPR's coverage and fed speech-to-text transcriptions to the participating stations.

:
: The results of a participant survey showed that 95% were happy with the captioning accuracy, 77% would be interested in purchasing a captioned radio display and 86% indicated interest in "dual-view" screens in cars for deaf passengers. The respondents also ranked emergency notifications as the most important type of information a captioned radio could provide.

:
: "I usually tune out the radio when it's on because it is difficult to understand the dialogue with my hearing loss," said Betsy McCarthy, who participated in the demonstration. "This technology would allow me instant access to a broadcast as opposed to taking the extra time to obtain a transcript when one is available."

: (Mike Stern, Radio & Records)
