A lot of what a jock does depends on the station they're at and the day part. Certain formats have more active listeners who are more willing to participate. The same goes for different times of day. A drive time show will pull in more callers than a midday show because people aren't as inclined to call just to throw in their two cents while they're working. Some might not be allowed to pick up the phone. I could have the best phone topic and get zero calls during the midday show, but the lines light up during a drive time.

As for what I do while I'm in the studio, I answer any phone calls, do show prep, look up artist info, and do other assigned work that doesn't take me out of the studio. Very few jocks only do one thing anymore, and some do their other things while the music is playing.

: What do disc jockeys do the whole time? I flip between Z104 and Magic 98 and a couple others. Are these folks just writing their banter during the "music marathon"? Do they have other duties in between? I don't think that they are the people choosing the next 7 songs or anything.

: Mind you, I'm not criticizing or anything. I'm just really curious when I'm listening!
