Possibly Dopey Question about FM Hosts

What do disc jockeys do the whole time? I flip between Z104 and Magic 98 and a couple others. Are these folks just writing their banter during the "music marathon"? Do they have other duties in between? I don't think that they are the people choosing the next 7 songs or anything.

Mind you, I'm not criticizing or anything. I'm just really curious when I'm listening!
