Problem is, that station only works because it has a worldwide audience. A station like that could never fly in a local market because too few people would listen. The Jack/Bob/Charlie stations all have some sort of focus, mostly 80's or Classic Rock, and only survive because of those focuses.

People love variety, but they love THEIR variety. "Take Five" next to "Ants Marching" would appeal to me, but someone else wouldn't be so happy. Chances are, too few people would know only one or the other artist and unfamiliarity is a killer...that's why stations have tight playlists.

Good music with eclectic styles. From Dave Brubeck to Dave Matthews to Pete Seger to Peter Gabriel to The Beatles to STP to Joe Strummer and stuff all over the map. It�s what radio should be.
