The State Journal (and the Cap Times riding on its coattails) is doomed. Things are only going to get worse for the newspaper industry, and only the best run organizations will survive. Unfortunately, there's no one at Capital Newspapers or Lee Enterprises that is capable of stopping the bleeding.
Back when (pre-Capital) Madison Newspapers was minting money, Lee pretty much left them alone. Now that the well is drying up, Lee has tightened their grip on the organization and, believe me, there's nothing that Lee can't screw up. The bumpkins in Davenport only knew how to run newspapers when the newspapers were pretty much running themselves.
I'm not saying this with any glee - I love newspapers, read the Journal every day, and I read both papers every day when the Cap Times was printed. I feel sad that something I enjoy and depend upon for information is being butchered alive.
