WSUM brings eclectic radio (and free cake!) to Madison

If you channel-hop local radio stations a lot in the car, you know that feeling of being trapped inside a loopy time warp as yet another '80s megahit or Pussycat Dolls production gets flogged to death.

Meanwhile, UW-Madison's student radio station, WSUM/91.7 FM, is guaranteed to have entertaining, unusual and fresh programming throughout the day. Unless, as has been known to happen on occasion, a DJ abandons the studio early to make his biology exam on time.

But dead air is a rarity. Most of the time, there's a student manning the mic with low-key aplomb on shows like "The Wisco Disco Hour," "Aural Sex," "Funk My Life," "Closet Redneck Hour" and "Beer Talk Today."

WSUM celebrates seven years at its current spot on the dial with a free anniversary show and free cake this Friday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m. in Der Rathskeller at the Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St. Local band Steez will be rolling out a set of its popular "creepfunk" songs.

The station also has another reason to party: It has moved out of the cramped digs on State Street into gleaming new studios at the new Student Services Tower, 333 East Campus Mall (where University Square 4 used to be). You can check out the new space during an open house from 4 to 7 p.m Friday. Be sure to RSVP first with Beth Johnson in the Department of Life Sciences Communication -- ekjohnson4@wisc.edu or 262-1464.
