Red-faced Nielsen executives admitted Friday that a software glitch in their ratings tabulation system has been fouling up the ratings for broadcast and syndicated programming since March 2.

Rankings from the audience measurement service, which holds a near monopoly on the ratings business, is used daily to calculate how much advertisers pay for TV commercials.

The beneficiary of the glitch turned out to be ABC, which has seen its ratings soar in recent months. Most recently its 'World News Tonight' telecast dethroned NBC’s 'Nightly News' as the most watched in the U.S.

“We started to credit that viewing to different programs,” said Patricia McDonough, Nielsen’s senior VP of planning policy and analysis. “Some of that was done to the wrong source.”
