I would argue the reason nights don't matter anymore is because nights have been so oversimplified to fit in with the sound of the rest of the radio station. Night jocks have so little creative freedom for the structure of their shows, and of course no real input on the music but that isn't new. They're told to talk in 10 seconds or less (and 10 secs is long, according to consultants now) and they have little to no imaging or anything to differentiate their show apart from the jukebox the rest of the stations now sound like. So, to round up, no structural input in the show, no creative freedom, no imaging elements like sweepers, beds and jingles, and no permission to talk for 30 or 45 seconds and do an interesting phoner or bit. Why should listeners listen? Just throw on a Youtube mix or Spotify. There's nothing to connect the audience to the show or the jock. Bring back personality and we will see a resurgence in the radio audience! It will take awhile and real dedication but it's possible! We don't have to turn our radio stations into jukeboxes.
